You don't normally hear the words yoga and hip-hop in the same sentence—unless you're talking about Y7, which bills itself as a hip-hop-inspired yoga studio. "When you're holding that plank to Jay Z, it makes things a little bit easier," says cofounder Sarah Levey. Also, the lyrics make for some sick decor, as seen on the staircase at one location:
While Y7 uses its playlists to help students flow through three increasingly difficult sequences, they jibe with pretty much any type of exercise. "When you start a workout, you want to intentionally separate yourself from the rest of the day," says Erin Ward, an instructor at Y7. She says all of the studio's playlists follow a rough formula of, "'starting out now, I'm entering.' And then it's, 'Go, go, go,' and then, 'I'm cooling down.'" Here's the mix from a recent class:
