A cruel act of fat-shaming changed one woman’s life drastically.
Emily Case, a 22-year-old nail technician from Folkestone, England, had always struggled with her weight. She used to weigh over 322 pounds—causing her to avoid social events and comfort-eat. But her life-long struggle came to a crossroads one day in 2013.

Case was on her way to visit a friend when she was viciously harassed. While walking down the street, a group of heartless men drove past, shouting at her and calling her a “fatty.” One even threw a kebab at her.
“It was absolutely mortifying,” Case told the Mirror. “The fact that absolute strangers could humiliate me like that was really upsetting. It felt like I was back with the bullies on the school playground.”
The incident sparked a fire within Case, who said she decided she was tired of being ashamed of her body. After visiting a doctor, she discovered she had hypothyroidism, a disease that slows metabolism and causes weight gain.
Although she managed to lose some weight on her own, she decided to receive gastric bypass surgery to help ensure the weight would stay off.
