It is generally recognized that people is America’s most-read magazine, with a weekly readership of over 46 million. Notwithstanding the much-vaunted decline of print media, the publication’s annual ranking of the 100 most beautiful people in the world continues to draw a huge amount of interest.
This year, the magazine has crowned Jennifer Aniston as 2016 World’s Most Beautiful Woman.
The former Friends star said she was “humbled” and “very, very flattered” by the title: “There was this sort of very excited, teenage-y kind of moment.”
Aniston was followed by Reese Witherspoon is second place, Sofia Vergara in third, Keke Palmer in fourth and Selena Gomez in fifth place.
People has been producing its “Beautiful People” lists since 1990, when the title went to Michelle Pfeiffer.
Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé Knowles, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lupita Nyong’o and Sandra Bullock have also been named in first place this decade.
Aniston has won the title once before, in 2004. She told People she has been paying more attention to her beauty regime than she did last time she scooped the prize. “It’s funny, it’s a really quick transition from not a care and now all of a sudden, we’ve got to really be mindful of what we put inside our bodies. And how we sleep and take care of ourselves. You can get away with a lot in your 20s.”
And writing for the Telegraph, beauty journalist Emma Gunavardhana praised People’s decision saying: “By hailing Aniston 2016’s most beautiful woman, People magazine have cleverly thrown their weight behind [a] movement to embrace beauty of all ages.
“Though I’ve never interviewed Jen face-to-face myself I know a few people who have and their assessment is always the same – that of all the stars she’s the one that really glows in the flesh.
“Jen’s ‘win’ suggests People magazine isn’t making its choice based on appearance alone, but instead a tally of the measure of a person also. In truth, we’ve been through a lot with Jen. Some might say she’s been chewed up and spat out in the media, her entire personal life laid bare for everyone to pour over in forensic detail. How has she reacted? With nothing but poise and class. Two qualities more beautifying and impressive than any Instagram filter.”
